Microsoft Store Now Offers Replacement Components for Surface Devices

Posted June 14, 2023 | Microsoft | Microsoft Store | Microsoft Surface | Mobile | Surface | Windows

Starting today, Microsoft is now offering replacement components for Surface devices in its Microsoft Store. This should be great news for consumers with Surface devices that are out of warranty, and Microsoft is also offering free repair guides for its various Surface devices.

“While we have always offered world-class warranty and repair services via Microsoft support, we have been working to increase repair options by designing products that are easier to repair and by expanding our network of Authorized Service Providers. As part of this larger initiative, we are excited to offer replacement components to technically inclined consumers for out-of-warranty, self repair,” announced Tim McGuiggan, VP Devices Services & Product Engineering at Microsoft.

The US, Canada, and France will be the first markets where Microsoft will start offering replacement components for Surface devices on the Microsoft Store. Customers will also be able to buy specialized tools to repair their devices on iFixit.

Microsoft won’t be offering replacement components for all of its Surface devices, and the selection will be more limited for older devices such as the Surface Pro 7 and Pro 8, as well as the Surface Laptop 3 and 4. However, Microsoft will offer approximately 10 replacement parts including the battery, display, and Surface Connect port for the Surface Pro 9, Surface Laptop 5, and Surface Laptop Studio.

If you’re curious about pricing details, here’s what you can expect:

  • Surface Pro 9 replacement battery ($249.99 for the 5G model)
  • Replacement screen for Surface Pro 9: $349.99
  • Replacement screen for Surface Laptop 5: $399.99
  • Replacement keyboard for Surface Laptop Studio: $212.99
  • Replacement screen for Surface Studio 2+: $1,749.99

So yes, the prices aren’t exactly cheap, especially if you need to add the service tools available to purchase on iFixit. However, this is still a great step towards making Surface devices last longer. Last year, Apple made a similar move with the launch of a self-service repair program for iPhones and MacBooks.
