Samsung Launches Intelligent Wi-Fi Mesh Routers

Posted August 13, 2018 | Hardware | Samsung | SmartThings | Wi-Fi | Windows

Samsung is launching a new Wi-Fi mesh router today. Mesh routers, for those unfamiliar, allows you to make sure internet coverage reaches all the corners of your house. These things are especially helpful when you have a big house, or when some parts of your house are getting slower internet speeds than the others closer to your primary router.

Samsung’s Wi-Fi Mesh Router is exactly like that, except it has a couple of differentiating points. First, it acts as a SmartThings hub, letting you configure the router itself from the SmartThings app, while also being able to control all your SmartThings-supported smart home devices from the app. And second, the company has teamed up with Plume Design to integrate some intelligence into the routers.

This way, the routers will be able to intelligently allocate bandwidth to all the different devices connected. So for example, if you are uploading a ton of files to OneDrive while someone in your house is watching Netflix, the routers will intelligently be able to allocate maximum bandwidth to your OneDrive upload while making sure the Netflix stream remains unaffected. It’s a really neat idea, though it probably isn’t a completely reliable system. After all, this is all powered by artificial intelligence, and the system learns to adapt to your usage over time.

Samsung’s SmartThings Wi-Fi Mesh Router will be available for $119 each, and the company is also offering a three-unit pack for $279.
