Microsoft Teams is adding new video filters allowing users to improve their appearance during video meetings. The first two filters, Adjust Brightness and Soft focus, have started to roll out on the Teams desktop app and they can be applied before and during meetings.

“Soft focus applies a smoothing effect to appearance, and Adjust brightness enhances the video quality when lighting is poor,” the software giant explained on the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. The two filters will be turned off by default, and IT admins will also be able to disable them in their organization. 

Microsoft Teams’ first video filters are pretty subtle compared to the less serious options available on Instagram or other social platforms. Zoom has also added support for more eccentric video filters a while ago, and the Teams competitor went even further by recently launching new 3D animal avatars. 

If Microsoft Teams is keeping its first video filters professional for now, they should still be a welcome complement to the background blur and virtual backgrounds options available in the app. To reduce meeting fatigue, Microsoft also made it possible to hide your own video feed during meetings back in January.
